First Post

Well I've been blogging on another site but am becoming more and more dissatisfied with it as it's becoming more of a religion site than what it was previously supposed to be for. And one thing that has really been bothering me about it is something I didn't think I should post there as I knew I would be attacked for it. So anyway here I am on another blog site for the very purpose of getting this off my chest and seeing if there is anyone else out there that might agree. Actually not to be rude, but I really don't care if anyone agrees I guess I just want to say it! LOL

So first let me say that I just graduated with my teaching degree and I am looking forward to starting my first year as a "real" teacher. I spent last year student teaching and working my a** off and learned SO much. One of the main things I learned was how challenging teaching really is. I mean yes, we get summers and holidays off and that is awesome but it is definitely one of those jobs you take home with you and no matter how much time you spend your work is never really done. This goes for a lot of other jobs as well. Anyway there is so much to remember, learn, and just "know" so that you can really help your students. I am nervous about being a teacher because I want so bad to be one of those teachers you remember forever, and for good reasons not bad.

So here lies my issue. The subject of homeschooling. Now don't get me wrong, just because I am a teacher in public schools does not mean that I am automatically against homeschooling. Quite the contrary actually. I think that if a mom (or dad for that matter) feels that they want to homeschool because of various reasons, whether it be inadequate public schools in their area or religious reasons, I think that is great. It takes a lot of energy, planning, and effort to not only be a mom/dad and do everything around the house but to teach your kids as well. So my issue is not with people home schooling their kids but with people not doing it correctly.

Every state is different in how they govern homeschooling and I'm only basing my judgment on what I have read on various blogs but I feel like some people who home school are not qualified. Some blogs I have read talk about how they take long vacations, or how they don't really feel like schooling today, or they are going to take the week off. Other blogs I read have horrible spelling and grammatical errors and don't use proper English. Now I know that when we blog those things just sometimes happen (I'm sure I have a few in this post right now) but I am talking about the same mistakes over and over again. For example if I were to tell you a story and ask you if that makes sense? However I see "Does that make since" or "I'm trying to loose weight" instead of "lose". Also the different forms of "their" not used correctly. Then in the next paragraph I read about how their child is not doing well in spelling or writing!! It just infuriates me. I feel like some people are doing their children a disservice by homeschooling them when they themselves don't have all the tools they need. I mean I know they have benefits that public schools don't have like real life applications, field trips, and access to religion in the classroom but if these students are going to one day want to go to college or get a job that requires them to have some writing skills I feel they are not going to be prepared.

Ok so that is my rant. PLEASE DON'T THINK THIS IS AN ATTACK ON HOMESCHOOLING because I know plenty of people that homeschool and have done a WONDERFUL job, and if we didn't need the money do get out of debt I might consider doing it myself. I just think there should be stricter guidelines on who is allowed to homeschool and if parents want to homeschool and know they don't have all the skills they need, I wish they would take it upon themselves to learn those things before they try to teach their children. END OF RANT....................

Hey, Jill. I'm here by way of our mutual friend, Kristin.

Your post sounds perfectly reasonable to me. The education of our children is an awesome responsibility. It's too bad there are so many parents who weren't well-educated or instilled with a love of learning. It creates a vicious cycle.

I plan to homeschool, because the public schools won't teach my children about the Zionist plot to rule the world (just kidding).
